What is GitLab?

Before we delve into the topic of this post—what GitLab is—it is necessary to first provide an overview of Git.

For those who may not know, Git is open-source software designed for version control. This decentralized system, focused on tracking changes in code files, is one of the most widely used due to its efficiency and simplicity.

Git records all changes made to a project and stores the information in a repository, also enabling collaborative work among development teams, making it more effective and streamlined.

What is GitLab?

With the introduction complete, we move on to the tool at hand. As its name suggests, GitLab is a Git repository hosting service that allows applications to be connected and managed collaboratively, as a DevOps platform.

This term should not be confused with GitHub, a platform we have already covered in another article on our blog.

What can you do with GitLab?

This tool enables full control over groups and projects, making it possible, for example, to track the current status of developments and the activity history. In this way, you can access all changes made by the teams involved, along with other relevant process information, enriching it and taking it a step beyond simple version control.

Within this general overview of GitLab’s capabilities, several features stand out in particular: issue tracking and error notification systems, the ability to create collaborative work wikis, its project planning tools, the capacity to manage groups and developments, permission and user access management, and the option to add comments to address specific aspects during creation or maintenance processes.

Advantages of GitLab

For these and other reasons, GitLab is establishing itself as the most widely used system in its category. In summary, these are some of its advantages:

  • Enables comprehensive project management that easily adapts to business needs
  • It is a tool that is easy to configure and administer
  • Reduces working time
  • This framework promotes cooperation between teams, increasing efficiency
  • Issue tracking and error notifications
  • Security in processes
  • Can import existing repositories
  • Has a simple and intuitive web interface

As we can see, GitLab is not limited to simple revision management; it offers a comprehensive framework that facilitates project and team monitoring, providing a DevOps environment. It is not merely hosting for Git version control projects—it is much more.
