What is a storage service provider and how do you choose one?
A storage service provider, or SSP (Storage Service Provider), is a company that provides IT storage and the management services that go with it.
As well as offering that storage, an SSP may also provide back-up copies and periodic archiving.
What types of storage do companies use?
There are two main types: cloud storage and local storage. Both are perfectly valid, and the profile and needs of each company have to be understood before making a specific recommendation. Cloud storage is nevertheless becoming the option most companies choose.
Some of the advantages of cloud solutions compared with local storage are:
- Improved usability and accessibility, because the interfaces are easy to use and do not require expert knowledge.
- Greater security and convenience. Storage is how these providers earn their living, so they use specialised cyber-security to prevent errors and get ahead of attacks.
- Costs in line with the needs of each business, which also saves on structural expenses: there is no need for an in-house storage administration team, or for the storage equipment itself.
- Easier file sharing, and support for several users or synchronised devices without one person’s work getting in the way of another’s or putting the data at risk.
- Scalability and flexibility. Storage adapts to the needs of each business, with no migration required when a change or an expansion is needed.
