What is DevOps?

DevOps is a framework for software development and IT operations that eliminates the distance between the various teams involved, fostering cooperation among the professionals participating in its implementation and maintenance.

Based on this definition, it can already be inferred that DevOps promotes a profound change in business practices, implementing a new internal culture within the organization. We are at a time when business environments are highly dynamic, making it essential to work in flexible and agile environments to respond to clients, allowing for efficient handling of any new turn.

Delving a little deeper, we cannot overlook its name, which comes from the combination of the terms development/Dev and operations/Ops. This designation already announces its objective: the integration of all stakeholders involved in each stage of project development, which are no longer isolated.

That is, based on a DevOps philosophy, teams do not focus on a single phase of the production process; they are active participants throughout the entire development and maintenance process, streamlining processes, increasing responsiveness to changes, errors, or unforeseen events, and enhancing quality.

What is DevOps used for?

As we have been pointing out, DevOps enables the creation of applications aimed at process automation, changing the way of working and the traditional operational concept of unitary and individual departments. Teams that are generally isolated and operate as links in a chain, one after another (development, IT operations, quality engineering, and security), with DevOps participate in each and every stage of the product creation process.

The collaborative culture fostered by DevOps allows for process optimization, gaining in quality, time, and operability: time-to-market is reduced, necessary adaptations to the market and competition are much more agile, and reliability is gained. In short, DevOps improves performance at all levels by interrelating teams, as well as technology and processes.

Benefits of DevOps

As we are seeing throughout this post, the benefits offered by the shift in business culture to a DevOps methodology are numerous and significant. A good DevOps implementation provides organizations that adopt it with:

  • Higher performance, efficiency, and productivity
  • Increased quality of developments
  • Process optimization
  • Adaptability and scalability
  • Simplicity for administration and maintenance

Ultimately, the involvement of development and operations teams in all phases of product creation and maintenance, as promoted by a DevOps philosophy, improves the organization’s internal capabilities and the quality and response offered to the client.

In a changing world where market reactions must be fast and efficient, it is essential to optimize work procedures, a task for which the DevOps culture has proven to be more than effective.
