The European Union supports LISDATA’s REPOSAT project

Improving environmental management and conservation with Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

The European Union has supported LISDATA’s REPOSAT project, aimed at improving environmental management and conservation through Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Specifically, this initiative will create a repository of empowered satellite imagery, both current and historical, to generate a source of information that provides added value to sectors such as agriculture, the environment, or renewable energies.

The general objective of the project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), is to provide the user with accurate, reliable, and continuous terrain information to, among other things, improve environmental management and conservation, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change, and ensure civil security. This information will be provided by updated and historical satellite images, processed and optimized, which can be requested through a web application.

The transmitted information, in the form of calculated indices for vegetation, humidity, soil desertification, atmospheric water vapor, etc., will facilitate decision-making in land management for any type of user and will be accessible instantly from anywhere in the world. Consequently, REPOSAT will improve the technological level of the target sectors, especially agriculture.

Artificial intelligence in agriculture

The report ‘Climate change, impacts and vulnerability in Europe 2016’, published by the European Environment Agency (EEA), identifies the Iberian Peninsula as one of the critical hotspots for the effects of climate change. The increase in maximum temperatures and the generalized decrease in precipitation will lead to an increased risk of extreme phenomena, such as prolonged periods of drought. In practice, this will mean that irrigation water becomes an increasingly scarce and limiting resource, making its efficient use more necessary than ever.

New technologies applied to agriculture are presented as a solution to these problems, as they allow for the consideration of intra-plot variability in farm management. Furthermore, they provide a large amount of precision information that can be consulted in real-time on a computer or mobile device, thereby facilitating decision-making.

Therefore, the use of these new technologies applied to agriculture will allow for a more efficient use of irrigation water, fertilizers, and phytosanitary products, increasing farm profitability through cost reduction and minimizing environmental impact by adjusting to the actual requirements of the crops.
