Microsoft, the undisputed leader in Gartner’s 2023 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence platforms

The new and long-awaited edition of Gartner’s 2023 Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence platforms has now been published, in which Microsoft demonstrates its authority in the Leaders segment, which it shares with Tableau and Quik. The Visionaries area is crowded, with representation from IBM, SAS, Sisense, and Oracle, among others.

Microsoft: five years leading Gartner’s Magic Quadrant

Every year, companies with IT needs eagerly await the publication of Gartner’s Magic Quadrant (Magic Quadrant), which they use as a guide to select the products that best fit their current and future needs. This framework enables a quick and highly visual comparison between technology companies, based on their positioning in one of its four quadrants (Leaders, Challengers, Niche Players, and Visionaries).

As we mentioned in the recently published 2023 edition, Microsoft is shown as the undisputed leader in the analysis of Analytics and Business Intelligence platforms. The technology consultancy Gartner reflects in its quadrant—based on an exhaustive study—Microsoft’s absolutely dominant position in the Leaders segment, with a significant advantage over its competitors. Tableau and Qlik also appear in this segment, with the three of them occupying this coveted space.

With this new leadership position, this is now the fifth consecutive year that Gartner has ranked Power BI as the most comprehensive Business Intelligence platform on the market, with the strongest ability to execute (the axes of its famous quadrant). This year, Gartner highlights the massive reach and momentum of the technology giant’s core ABI platform through the “integration of Microsoft 365, Azure, and Teams; flexible pricing and functionality well above average; and an ambitious product roadmap”.

It also positively assessed the 2022 integration of metric tracking capabilities, through which teams can align their objectives and key priorities in a collaborative visual experience. According to the consultancy, Microsoft’s new Premium Gen 2 “improves the price/performance ratio and value through its auto-scaling capabilities”, and the development of a low-code data marts solution has facilitated access to self-service managed relational analytics solutions.

Detailed analysis

In its detailed analysis, Gartner highlights that including Power BI in Microsoft 365 has provided “a huge channel for the platform’s propagation”. The integration of Power BI and Teams—given the surge of the latter as a tool for remote collaborative work following the pandemic—and the alignment of Power BI and Azure Synapse simplify business tasks, making Microsoft 365 a more attractive platform.

Regarding the price/value combination, Gartner underscores Microsoft’s effort, with a per-user offering, to attract organizations with fewer than 300 employees. Large corporations, however, still have the capacity-based option available, which becomes more cost-effective as the number of users increases. On the other hand, it notes the absence of a cross-selling strategy aimed at increasing revenue, such as those in place at most ABI platform providers.

For Gartner, Microsoft’s clear vision for the cross-use of Power BI, Power Apps, and Power Automate is also a strength, as a platform for driving business value. In this regard, it praises the fact that Power Apps can be embedded in Power BI dashboards or can access Power BI datasets; that Power Automate flows can be built to perform various actions based on the data; and the way in which AI-based services (text, sentiment, and image analysis) are available in Power BI Premium.

Microsoft continues its steady evolution

For all these reasons, for the renowned technology consultancy Gartner, Microsoft has this year earned the right to strengthen its prominent positioning in the Leaders segment of its Magic Quadrant. This is now five years leading the sector and, given the deployment and evolution of the computing giant, we anticipate that this position of strength will continue to be consolidated in future editions of the guide for selecting technology providers.

Far from relaxing, Microsoft is immersed in constant evolution, as is the market, and offers us new apps, enhancements to those it already markets, or integrations between its tools, to form a robust platform that simplifies and streamlines business work—something that undoubtedly reinforces its position as a leader.
