LISDATA participates in the 0Accidntes project

Workplace accidents have seen major improvements in recent decades, but the construction sector continues to record a high number of cases. The 0Accidntes business consortium, in which LISDATA participates as a partner and which has recently been recognised for its innovative nature, aims to put an end to this through the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies.

Workplace accidents: a persistent problem

The workplace accident landscape in Spain has undergone significant changes in recent decades, with substantial improvements in occupational safety leading to a major reduction in the number of victims. Thanks to stricter legislation, technological advances and greater awareness of occupational safety, the figures have fallen from around 2 million cases (3,000 of them fatal) in 1970 to around 740,000 (nearly 2,000 fatal) in 1990 and to around 505,500 (637 of them fatal) in 2020. But despite the progress made, challenges still remain that require new approaches to continue moving towards the complete elimination of this type of incident.

Technology solutions for construction

One of the sectors most prone to accidents is construction. Safety regulations have been tightened over the years and training in occupational risk prevention has improved considerably. Today it is rare to see workers without a hard hat or other common protective equipment working on a site; just a decade ago, it was quite common. However, workers’ exposure to certain inherent risks, such as falls from great heights or operating heavy machinery, continues to pose a challenge today.

0Accidntes, a consortium made up of several Spanish companies and funded by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) through the CIEN Strategic Programme, aims to achieve accident-free construction through the use of various digital tools. Thanks to virtual sensors, state-of-the-art robotics, cybersecurity components and AI, work environments can be monitored and dangerous situations can be predicted in real time for the safety and health of construction workers.

LISDATA contributes its R&D expertise

For LISDATA, which participates in 0Accidntes as one of the technology partners, “the digitalisation of real work environments through AI solutions can be key to reducing the number of workplace accidents in the construction sector far more than has been done so far”. Within 0Accidntes, LISDATA is working together with Signe and Alisys with the aim of creating a cognitive platform through tools for generating hybrid identities, autonomous exploration and information gathering in confined or hard-to-access environments.

The business consortium, led by FCC Construcción, originated in a PTEC (Construction Technology Platform) working group and now includes more than a dozen partners with experience in R&D&I and technology. These include, in addition to those already mentioned, Becsa, Fractalia, Metálicas Plásticas Jar and IDP, as well as the technology centres ITAINNOVA, CETIM and AIMPLAS, and INCOTEC as an external R&D&I consultancy. Through the prediction and prevention of hazards and risks in construction environments, 0Accidntes hopes to create a future without preventable workplace accidents for the construction sector, thereby saving hundreds of lives each year.

An award-winning project

0Accidntes has recently won the 2023 Best National Innovation Project Award, organised by PTEC in collaboration with Tecnalia. The award took into account the project’s technological excellence, the clarity and relevance of its objectives, and its social and environmental impact on the sector. In this way, the innovative work of the participating companies has been recognised in a field as important to the Spanish economy as construction.
